A List Of Legally Phased-Out Pesticides

Worrying about pest control can be a large part of some peoples livelihoods. Between rodents, insects, weeds or other landscaping diseases, most farmers and home gardeners must deal with these pests on a regular basis. Organization abilities are frequently needed in order to lower the number of pests to a number that can be dealt with more easily. Among those management skills may be such strategies as timing your plant watering to allow plants to dry before the humid hours of the night when diseases are more prevalent, making use of mulch and residue of crops to shade soil and thus discourage weed growth, and avoiding peak insect outbreaks when you set your planting dates.

If none of these natural methods work for you and your pest problem cannot be managed, the advantages of chemical pesticides might be the best answer. There are many different pesticides which have already been eradicated due to federal health laws, and many more on the way out. It is essential that you stay on top of federal regulations and other EPA reviews to avoid the use of banned chemicals and inform other users of any changes you discover under the law. We have created a list of those products which are on a hit list, as well as those that can still be purchased and used. One of the chemicals that retailers have been instructed to pull from their shelves is dursban, or chlorpyrifos. Further education on pest control is found on local pest controllers.

The manufacturers of dursban are no longer able to sell it to homeowners, and as a result most of it is gone by now. Gardeners, however, are still able to legally make use of the chemical if it is already in their possession, even after the sales have stopped. With the loss of Dursban the control of borers has been under threat. In the southwestern part of this state, dursban was the primary chemical used to control tree borers - one of the leading pest problems in the area.

It is hoped that chemical products called permethrin esfenvalerate can help make a difference. At Colorado State University a professor of entomology has commented permethrin esfenvalerate products are actually the same or better than the organophosphates for use in all types of soil control efforts, even borers. These chemicals are considered highly effective as well as a lot less dangerous than diazinon and dursban, and can do an excellent job of being replacements for these other insecticides.

EPA documents indicate that by now Diazinon should have already been phased out of use. The EPA mandated that by 2003, the production, formulation and sales of diazinon to retailers was to end. If you take care to follow the instructions on the label, these products are not dangerous. A chemical which is vital for control of spider mites, kelthane, has also been on the list of pesticides to be phased out. Any and all domestic utilization of this chemical has been willingly given up on and taken away from ingredients labels. This was a chemical that had been used for many years to control the spider mite population on vegetables and ornamentals. An alternative option for control of mites on vegetables is the use of insecticidal soaps or even horticultural oils. More resources on pest control can be found here at building inspections.

Lindane is another chemical solution that has been reviewed by the EPA for environmental risk or hazard. Learning any information regarding the site on lindane’s existing legal utilization has not been very fruitful. But, you won’t be able to find it in stores because it hasn’t been sold for quite awhile. Most likely, it is no longer acceptable for homeowner use. The control of borers has been the number one reason homeowners have used Lindane. If pest damage is of a considerable amount and all other attempts to manage the situation have been tried, only then should chemicals be considered as alternatives even though they may be useful tools in the practice of pest control.
