Gardening Ideas Can Improve Overall Harvest

Every spring, home gardeners head to the same old spot in the yard and prepare the soil for their annual plantings. They will usually plant the same variety of plants in the same locations and plunder their harvest in the fall, usually happy with the results. However, over the years their enthusiasm may begin to wan as they begin to realize they lack any original gardening ideas to help their plants grow bigger and more productive.

With many plants typically grown in a garden, there are some that can actually provide a benefit to other plants and some that attract pests that they can tolerate, but surrounding plants may not be immune to their efforts. One of the better gardening ideas is to plant flower that attract bees around the garden as many plants rely on these insects to help pollinate many of the vegetables grown in small city and urban plots. Without the pollination, the plants cannot reproduce and the yield from the plants will be smaller or non-existent.

There are a few basics involved to realize a successful garden including the type of soil, the amount of water and drainage and for newer farmers, getting a few gardening ideas from successful gardeners can help them grow some amazing gardens with improved harvest.

Soil Preparation Gives Garden Best Roots

One of the common mistakes people make during their first attempts at gardening is in the proper preparation of the soil. While making sure it is adequately fertilized and contains the right mixture of soil, sand and a water retention compound, will not be able to do their jobs if the ground is not properly prepared. Most gardening ideas suggest the garden soil be loosed in an area that will allow the roots to easily reach out to gather in the food provided.

Loosening the dirt in an area only large enough in which to plant the plant, will confine its growing area, much the same size as if it were growing in a pot. Stunting the root growth will also stunt the plant’s growth and the basic rule contained in gardening ideas, is to loosen the soil at least twice the size as the expected plant growth.

For example, if a plant is expected to grow to a width of one foot, the soil around the hole in which the plant is placed, should be at least two feet. While not everyone has adequate room for these gardening ideas to be implemented, the plants chosen for the area should be smaller.
