1. Mulching is essential because it helps to keep thework down a little. Mulching requires your roses to require less watering, weeding and helps minimize the risk of diseases. The best mulches are organic ones such as grass cuttings and wood chips.
2. You should feed your roses water regularly, but lightly during the growing season. When you water your roses, avoid directly watering the foliage as it may cause fungal diseases. You should water the roses at the roots.
3. Keep the area around your roses clear to stop them from getting locked in an area that doesn’t provide enough circulation.
4. You should prune your roses in the early spring. Or at the very least once the others start budding because the buds will eventually become new branches later.
5. Protect your roses during the winter months by adding a few additional inches of soil to the base of your roses. This should provide the extra needed heat in the winter.
6. It is best to avoid the white plastic cones when carrying out your winter protection as they can trap too much heat during the winter thaw. They are also very unattractive.
7. You should always sharpen your hand shears before cutting.
8. You should prune the dead and damaged branches first. Next, you should prune all but five of the leftover healthy branches. They should end up at about as thick as a pencil.
9. Clip back the bushes by around one third to one half, depending on how tall you want them. Prune above the outward facing buds, which is the buds that are on the outside of the rose bush because this will assist the bud to grow upward; which will make the center of the bud open up for better air circulation and shape.
10. Be sure to prune the climbing roses with great care. The branches have a inclination to overlap and you wouldn’t want to prune the wrong branches.
