Thinking About Lawn Care Yet?

I don’t know about you, but it seems like this winter is never going to end. I have lived in the Midwest for almost 12 years now and this has been the longest, coldest winter I can remember. The good news is, however, that it will soon end just like it does every year. But will you be ready to tackle the lawn care and landscape?

It’s important to think about lawn care and landscaping services now before the problems take hold on your green spaces. And believe me, there are plenty of issues that can crop up in a hurry if you aren’t paying attention.

Another advantage to getting an early jump on your landscape plans is saving money. If you plan to hire a pro landscape service or lawn care company like TruGreen, you can take advantage of early season pre-payment options that will save you money now and in the future.

Here are some quick tips for getting started on your lawn care and landscape plans for 2009.

Lawn Mowing

I’ve never done a study on this, but I assume that about half of you are do-it-yourselfers, and the other half hire a lawn maintenance company to mow, trim and edge our lawn. If you are going to DIY the lawn mowing, then you should definitely get out and tune up your mower and change the oil. It’s also a good idea to have the blade sharpened prior to the first cut.

If you plan to hire out the mowing, then get on board now as many of the smaller outfits book up early in the season and can’t take on more customers until the next year. The early bird gets the worm, and also gets first choice of lawn cutting services!

Lawn Fertilizer Applications

Once again, I think that about half of you guys will apply your own fertilizer and weed control products, and the other half will hire this service out. Either way, you need a plan of action. It’s fairly certain that dandelions and crab grass will be a problem in 2009, but other issues like lawn disease and insects can also invade, especially if we have a super wet spring. You may need a lawn care pro to help thwart these issues, so be ready to make the call should things get out of your control.

Tree and Shrub Services

It’s a given that you will need to have your trees, shrub and bushes trimmed and cut at some point during the year, but have you thought about fertilizing or spraying them as well? Many homeowners tend to overlook their landscape trees and shrubs, but they are really the most important part of your outdoor habitat. What would your house look like with no bushes in front or if it was missing that shade tree by the back patio? It’s very affordable to hire a landscape tree and shrub pro to come out and fertilize and spray your ornamentals for insect problems and fungus. If you have not considered this service in the past, this is the year to add it on.

I hope these simple tips will help you in your planning for the coming season. Just remember, getting a jump on the weeds and crabgrass means they can’t get the jump on you!
